On August 15th the Beefeaters hit the road for the trek along 401 to Belleville to face the Quinte Riptides at Loyalist College. Like many first games of a season with a new coach and many new assistants, the play of the Beefs was inconsistent. There were many highlight reel plays and many others that show there is a lot of work to be done.

The team came out sluggish in the first quarter and trailed 3-0 following a 27-yard field goal by Quinte. In the second quarter the Beefs came alive and scored three touchdowns. Three minutes into the second frame Jason Preece hauled in a DJ Fonti pass for a 34-yard touchdown. Brayden Rivard converted and London was up 7-3. Four minutes later, Fonti found Jason Leonard in the endzone from 5 yards out for another major. The Beefs went for a 2-point conversion at this point and were successful as Gabe Van Moorsel caught a 5-yard pass.

The final score of the first half was another Fonti touchdown pass, this time to Brandon Visouvath, from 21 yards out with 25 seconds remaining to make the half-time score 22-3 for the Beefs. The third quarter was scoreless as was the fourth until the final play of the game when the Riptides decided to run out the clock as they were deep in their own end and eventually conceded a safety as time ran out, making the final score 24-3 for the Beefs.

One notable defensive stand by the Beefs occurred in the second half. The Riptides managed to get the ball to first and goal, aided by penalties. In spite of many attempts, they could not breach the goal line and turned over the ball on downs.

Statistically, the Beefs almost doubled the Riptides’ net offense. London had 430 total yards to Quinte’s 227. The bulk of both teams offense was through the air as London racked up 401 yards passing and Quinte added 209. The Beefs also led in First Downs, 15-11 and Penalty/Penalty Yards, 15/152 to 5/35.

Individually, DJ Fonti was credited with 19 completions in 32 attempts for 396 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 3 passes intercepted. The leading receivers were Jason Preece with 3 receptions for 151 yards and a touchdown and Jason Leonard, who added 6 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Dayshawn Jacobs was the top ground gainer with 28 yards on 6 carries.

On defense, the Defensive points leader was Cole Vonlukawiecki with 17 defensive points from 7 tackles, an assist and a knock down. Amos Thomas earned 13 defensive points from 3 tackles, 1 assist, 1 knock down and an interception. Sincere Green added 12 defensive points that included a 49-yard interception return that would have been a touchdown except for an illegal block call. In total, 23 players picked up defensive points.

Next game is August 22nd at City Wide Sports Field against the Ottawa Sooners at 3:00pm.
