Beefs are back in the win column!
Friday night, under the lights at City Wide Sports Field, the Beefeaters topped the Hamilton Hurricanes 37-19 to move to 3-1 on the season. It was great to see so many alumni out for the contest along with mayoral candidate Susan Stevenson.
The game didn’t start the way the home team had hoped but the Beefs quickly turned it around. London’s first series began on the Canes’ 28-yard line following a 48-yard punt return by Jason Leonard. A sack and a 2-yard gain brought up third down and Brayden Rivard entered to try a 39-yard field goal. It was blocked and when the whistle blew to end the play, Jackson Hugli of Hamilton had scooped up the ball behind the line of scrimmage and rambled 49 yards to the Beefs’ 26-yard line. Four plays later, Canes’ QB, Ethan Balthazar (a Beefeater for the previous two years) hit Wes Wiens for a 13-yard touchdown pass. With the conversion, Hamilton was up 7-0 at the 5:36 mark of the first quarter.
The Beefeaters bounced back following a 32-yard kick-off return by Semi Taiwo. On the next play, Dayshawn Jacobs rumbled 69 yards for a major. Brayden Rivard’s first of five converts knotted the score at 7 at the 6:20 mark of the opening frame.
A pick six by Declan Cullen at the 9:24 mark of the second quarter put the Beefs up 14-7. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, the Canes conceded a safety to put the Beefs up 16-7. London took over the ball at their own 35-yard line and marched down the field in eight plays to score another touchdown with 1 second left on the clock. Heading to the dressing room for halftime, the Beefs led 23-7.
The third quarter was scoreless until Hamilton scored on a 19-yard pass from QB Matt Murray to receiver Zach Pereira with no time left on the clock. A 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 23-13.
London added another touchdown at the 6:11 mark of the final frame. Nick Seybold powered his way 32-yards for the score to make it 30-13. The Canes responded with a 6-play drive following London’s kickoff and put six more points on the board following a Murray to Michael Borota 19-yard pass. Again, the 2-point conversion attempt failed and the score read 30-19. The Beefs completed the scoring at the 13:25 mark of the fourth quarter on a 1-yard pass from QB Jackson Roth to Brandon Visouvath to make the final score 37-19.
Xavier Zatylny, making his second career start with the Beefs, went 7 for 16 for 106 yards and a touchdown. Jackson Roth, in relief of Xavier, completed 3 of 5 attempts for 67 yards and a touchdown.
On the ground, the Beefs racked up 244 yards. Zack Delwo had 91 yards on 12 carries while Dayshawn Jacobs totalled 75 yards on 4 carries. Jason Leonard led the receivers with 2 catches for 78 yards and Nathan Switzer hauled in 2 passes for 55 yards.
On defense, Sincere Green led in defensive points total with 17, including 2 sacks. Declan Cullen and Cole Vonlukawiecki each had 16 defensive points while DL Hayden Kirkham had an impressive 14 points, including 3 sacks.
